How Much Should a Business Website Cost in Johannesburg?

If you search for website design in Johannesburg, the pricing gets confusing quickly.

You will find freelancers, hosting companies, small studios and larger agencies. Some quote a few thousand rand. Others quote tens of thousands for what sounds, at first, like the same thing.

An August 2026 check of published Johannesburg pricing showed just how wide that spread is. Basic packages were available below R5,000, while other providers put professional business websites around R12,000–R40,000. Custom work can go much higher.

That does not mean the cheapest quote is a bargain or the most expensive one is better. Most of the time, the scopes are simply not the same.

A small business that needs a clean site with its services, contact details and a WhatsApp button is solving one problem. A business that needs service-specific landing pages, lead qualification, booking logic, CRM handoff or automation is solving another.

So I would not start by asking what a “normal” Johannesburg website costs. I would start with what the site needs to do.

You may only need a straightforward website

If your current site looks old, works badly on mobile or makes the business look less credible than it really is, the job can be fairly simple.

You may already have a logo, photographs and the information customers need. In that case, someone needs to organise it properly, improve the presentation and make it obvious how to call, WhatsApp or enquire.

There is no reason to turn that into a huge project.

A good template and sensible structure may be enough. I would rather see a small business buy the right level of website than spend more because custom sounds impressive.

The scope starts growing when the website has a more demanding commercial job.

Maybe customers cannot tell which service applies to them. Maybe you need local pages for specific areas or clearer proof before people enquire. Maybe leads arrive, but they are poor because the website has not explained enough. Maybe the website does its job, but the enquiry then disappears into an inbox with no clear owner.

Those are business-process questions as much as website questions.

What usually pushes the price up

The price climbs when more thinking, content, design or system work is needed.

A site that connects to bookings, payments, a CRM, quotations, dashboards or custom workflows is a different build from a brochure site. So is a project where the supplier has to work out the information structure, rewrite the copy, plan search pages and fix the enquiry journey.

This is why page-count comparisons are often misleading.

A six-page quote may include almost no strategy. Another six-page quote may include discovery, copy support, custom design, mobile QA, search planning and launch work. The number six does not tell you which one you are buying.

What I would ask before paying a deposit

I would want to know who is planning the structure, whether I am expected to write all the copy, whether the design is custom or template-based, how the mobile version is handled, where enquiries go, what “SEO included” means, who manages launch and what happens after the site is live.

I would also want clarity on ownership. The domain, hosting, website files, analytics and other accounts should not become a mystery once the project ends.

Then I would ask one more question: what does the person quoting me think is wrong with the current setup?

If the answer immediately becomes a discussion about colours, fonts and features, without any questions about customers, enquiries or how the business currently works online, I would be cautious.

WeDevelop is based in Johannesburg, but we do not price a project because the client happens to be here. We scope it around the job.

Sometimes that job is a cleaner, more credible website. Sometimes the website is only the visible part and the bigger issue is search visibility, the enquiry process or what happens behind the scenes after someone makes contact.

If you are comparing Johannesburg quotes, compare what is actually included before you compare the totals. The gap between two prices often makes much more sense once the scope is clear.
